Forgot to add this yesterday but thought about it again this morning: this reason this works is because he repeatedly wants something ineffable and can’t ever quite define it and she wants some kind of validation from him about her value. So she asks not once but twice, he has the chance on the second time to say what he failed to say in the first shot and as soon as she leaves he texts her something but we know it’s a lie. He wants to want something. He had the chance. He didn’t take it.
So. Good. (And I feel so sad for both of them, but for different reasons.)

I agree, the repetition feels authentic. I could see that it was part of her pattern of spiraling
